Who are Candidates for Dental Implants?

Dental implants are posts that are made of metal or frames that are implanted into the jawbone beneath the gum, which helps the dentist to mount artificial teeth, in case you have a missing tooth. Since these dental implants are positioned below your jawbone, they ensure that your artificial teeth are stable and will not keep shifting whenever you are eating or talking.

Unlike with ordinary bridges and dentures, where bridges must be attached on each side the adjacent teeth, the implants do not need to be attached to any other teeth for support.

Types of Denture implants

There are two types of dental implants that are considered to be safe and they include:

1. Endosteal implants

These denture implants are directly positioned on the jawbone and a second surgery is done to attach a post to the implant once the gum is healed then the artificial teeth are attached individually from the other teeth.

2. Subperiosetal implants

These are metal frames that are positioned on the jawbone just below the gum. Frames are then fitted on the jawbone as the gum heals and the artificial teeth are attached to the posts that protrude through the gum.

Most people suffer from missing teeth and this can affect their confidence negatively when they have to relate with others. It is also uncomfortable for them especially when eating. Dental implants can be successfully done on most people, therefore, you don’t have to spend the rest of your life with gaps between your teeth regardless of your age. It is advised that you get a dental implant as soon as possible after losing a tooth to avoid incurring more expenses in the future.

Candidates to receive dental implants

In order for you to be eligible to receive dental implants, certain factors are first put into consideration:

1. General health of the patient

Due to the surgical procedures that are involved during the dental implant process, certain chronicle diseases such as autoimmune, diabetes, and hemophilia can reduce the success rate of a dental implant. People who suffer from diabetes and those who smoke have fewer chances of having successful dental surgery since they tend to have a low oral health. This, in turn, affects the healing of their gums after the implant procedure. People who have received therapy to the head and neck are also not allowed to have a dental implant.

2. An adequate jawbone

Since dental implants are the artificial roots that are mounted to the jawbone in order to provide adequate stability to the artificial tooth, the dentists require that the patient have an adequate jawbone for the dental implant to be done.

3. Healthy gums

Healthy gums are ideal for the dental implant in order to support the artificial roots. Lack of proper dental hygiene could cause periodontal disease which is caused by bacteria attacking the cells around your teeth. People who suffer from gum disease may therefore not be eligible for the implant. Tooth decay could also lower the chances of the patient receiving an implant.

4. Age

Children are not suitable candidates for dental implants since their jawbone is still growing. Adults can receive an implant since their jawbone is already formed and fully developed.

5. Commitment

A dentist may consider the commitment of the patient to oral health before conducting the dental implant.

The success of the procedure is mostly dependent on a high level of oral health by the patient. Brushing your teeth. flossing after every meal and cleaning your gums thoroughly can go a long way to ensure a successful dental implant. The procedure could also fail due to smoking and therefore its' success requires the patient to refrain from smoking

6. Sufficient space to place the dental implant

The space left by the missing tooth should be adequate enough to allow an implant to be positioned beneath the gum while also allowing space for an artificial tooth. The bite could also complicate the procedure.  Therefore, the dentist may need to first evaluate the bite and make the necessary adjustment to create space for the implant.

Bottom line

Most dental implants are successful and in fact, the procedure is considered to be the most successful implant conducted if done on the ideal candidate. However, the long-term success of the implant depends on the individual patient. They must practice excellent oral hygiene such as brushing at least twice daily, visiting the dentist regularly and avoiding smoking and chewing on hard food.
