Is Your Diet Staining Your Teeth?

An effective way to keep stains and discoloration at bay is by taking proper care of your teeth and being careful about what you eat. Here is a look at some foods you want to avoid if you plan to keep your teeth stain-free.

Foods that can stain your teeth:

1. Pasta sauce

There are multiple reasons why you should avoid eating anything with pasta sauce. It has a bright red color that tends to stick to your teeth and has high-acidity levels. If you must have pasta sauce, eat some dark, leafy vegetables like broccoli, spinach, and kale prior to your meal. These will create a protective film that wards off the staining effects of tomato sauce.

2. Curry

Curry helps to bring out the flavor in many foods, but it can also discolor your teeth if you consume many curry-rich meals. This flavorful spice has a powerful yellow tint to it that will leave your teeth looking the same. Just as is the case with pasta sauce, try eating leafy vegetables, carrots, or apples to form a protective film over your teeth.

3. Balsamic Vinegar

This type of vinegar is often a salad dressing, but it can also leave your teeth badly stained thanks to the dark coloring agent it contains. There is an easy way to avoid staining your teeth when you consume balsamic vinegar. Make sure you add lots of lettuce to your salad since this cleans your teeth as you eat. Another beneficial method is to brush your teeth after your meal.

4. Berries

Eating berries are good for your overall health thanks to the antioxidants, but it is not so great for your teeth. Most berries have very strong natural coloring agents that have a tendency to stick to your teeth during consumption. The coloring agents in berries are so powerful that they remain just as potent even after processing the berries into juices, jam, or jelly.

Berries also contain acidic juices that can wreak havoc on the enamel of your teeth. After eating berries, make sure you rinse your mouth with water and avoid staining your teeth. You can also drink a glass of milk or eat some cheese to remove the coloring from your teeth.

5. Beverages like coffee, tea, or colas

There are many beverages that will stain and discolor your teeth if you consume them too often. These beverages include coffee, colas, wine, sports drinks, and tea. These types of drinks tend to be acidic, so they eat away at your enamel while staining your teeth. Consume these beverages in moderation, and rinse your mouth with water afterward.
