Maintaining good oral health will save you lots of money down the road. Taking proper care of your teeth is the cheapest way to have the perfect set of teeth we all wish we had. Failing to practice good oral hygiene is the surest way to guarantee you will have to empty your wallet at the dentist's clinic sooner or later.

Having good oral health does a lot more than just give a person a healthy set of teeth. Good oral hygiene also promotes fresh-smelling breath and good overall health. Here is a look at a few things that should be part of everyone's oral care routine:

1. Brush at least twice a day

When you consume foods and beverages, food particles remain on your teeth. The millions of bacteria in a person's mouth that consume these food particles and excrete acids, damaging the enamel of the teeth. By brushing twice a day, there are fewer food particles on the teeth for the bacteria in the mouth to convert into acids.

If these food particles remain on your teeth for prolonged periods, it eventually turns into tartar which facilitates tooth decay and gum disease. Brushing will not be enough to remove tartar, only a professional dental cleaning can remove the tartar from the surface of the teeth.

2. Floss daily

Flossing serves the same function as brushing your teeth to remove food particles from the teeth before they convert into acids. Since toothbrushes cannot reach the tight spaces between your teeth, use dental floss to clean these areas.

3. Use an antibacterial mouthwash

There is no amount of flossing that can reach every tight space in a person's mouth. That is where a quality mouthwash comes in. Mouthwash can clean spaces that even floss cannot reach and lower the bacteria count in the mouth. A good mouthwash will also freshen a person's breath.

4. Make sure your teeth get all the nutrients they need

Your teeth need two essential elements to keep them in tip-top condition: calcium and fluoride. Public water supplies are often fluoridated, so drink lots of this every day to re-mineralize your teeth. Toothpaste and mouthwash can also be good sources of fluoride. Fluoride helps to strengthen teeth enamel and fight off tooth decay.

Calcium helps to make your bones and teeth strong, which means they are less likely to crack or fracture. Anyone who is serious about maintaining good oral health should be eating lots of calcium-rich foods daily. Dairy products and green leafy vegetables are great sources of calcium, and these also contain enzymes that serve as a protective film that protects your teeth.

5. Visit a dentist twice a year

No oral hygiene routine is complete without regular visits to the dentist's office. We will perform a professional dental cleaning during the appointment to remove any tartar buildup. A full examination is also necessary during the appointment.

This examination gives us an opportunity to detect any developing issues to prevent significant damage to the patient's teeth. Want more tips to help you maintain good oral health? Talk to one of our dentists today.
