Dental Restoration Options for a Broken Tooth
A broken tooth is a tooth that is damaged or decayed and in need of repair to restore its appearance, function, and health. Depending on the type of damage and the level of severity, one dental restoration option may make for an appropriate solution. This review discusses the various dental restoration options a dentist may recommend for a broken tooth.
Broken tooth treatment: what are my dental restoration options?
A broken tooth could be a chip or crack in a tooth, a tooth that is worn down by bruxism, a decayed tooth, or a tooth that is damaged in a variety of other ways. Some of the more commonly recommended dental restoration options for a broken tooth include a crown, bonding, veneer, filling, implant, and bridge.
Dental crown
A dental crown, also called a dental cap, encapsulates all sides of the tooth. There are different material options available, including ceramic, porcelain-fused-to-metal, metal alloy, and gold crowns. The recommended material type depends on the location of the tooth and the preference of the patient. A dental inlay or onlay, which does not fully cover the tooth, may be available for a partially broken tooth.
Dental bonding
Dental bonding, also called composite resin bonding, uses a composite resin material that is coated over teeth to improve imperfections. This form of dental restoration is similar to a dental veneer and can be used to repair various types of broken teeth, including but not limited to chips and cracks.
Dental veneer
A dental veneer is made of porcelain material and is stronger and more durable than dental bonding. They can be used for chips, cracks, stains, worn down teeth (from bruxism), and more. They require customization and the lab and the broken tooth must be prepared, which may include the removal of some dental enamel. Subsequently, dental veneers are considered permanent restorations.
Dental filling
A dental filling is primarily used for dental cavities. They are a great way to restore the health and function of a broken tooth as well as improve its appearance. This restoration is affordable, safe, and non-invasive.
Dental implant
A dental implant may be recommended if a broken tooth is beyond what can be repaired. In this case, the tooth can be extracted and replaced with an implant-supported dental crown, which looks, feels, and functions just the same as a natural tooth.
Dental bridge
A dental bridge is another type of tooth replacement. Specifically, a dental fixed bridge involves using two healthy natural teeth on each side of the tooth as abutments and placing the abutment crown in the empty space. This is a more affordable alternative to a dental implant.
