Treating Injured Teeth

There are numerous ways to endure injured teeth accidentally, and it can happen seemingly anytime, anywhere and to anyone.

Since injured teeth occur in such a spontaneous manner, it is essential to have an understanding of how to treat injured teeth promptly, especially when a damaged tooth is completely knocked out.

How to Treat Injured Teeth

The form of treatment for damaged teeth is entirely dependent upon what type of injury the person suffered. In other words, a simple chipped tooth may not result in the same form of dental treatment as a tooth that has been knocked out of its root.

The following are the three most common ways to injure teeth and how to treat each one.

Chipped teeth

The most common form of injured teeth are teeth that get chipped, which can occur by biting too hard on a hard object or falling and hitting teeth on the ground.

Most chipped teeth only affect the enamel, which can be repaired with dental fillings. In some cases, a chipped tooth may require dental bonding, which is a procedure where a resin material is placed and lasered onto a tooth to mainly improve cosmetic concerns, such as chipped teeth.

Dental veneers - which are tooth-colored shells that cover the surface of a tooth and help restore the appearance of a tooth - are also a widespread form of cosmetic restoration following chipped teeth. In some instances, a dental crown may be in order if the chipped tooth is more serious.

Cracked teeth

Cracked teeth - which is also a common form of injured teeth - are often slightly more severe than chipped teeth, especially when the crack is not noticeable by others. In the event the cracked teeth are not noticeable aesthetically, than the person may feel as if there is no need to repair the injured teeth.

However, cracked teeth can cause a severe level of sensitivity while eating and drinking, especially if treatment is not administered promptly.

There are several treatment options for injured teeth that become cracked, including a dental filling or a dental crown. Also, cracked teeth often require a root canal, and more serious cases may require tooth extraction. Regardless of the severity initially, it is important to seek dental care as soon as possible for injured teeth that crack.

Knocked out teeth

Injured teeth that are completely knocked out of place require a special sense of urgency as the tooth may be able to be replaced into the mouth if prompt dental care is administered.

In the event injured teeth are knocked out of the socket, follow this process to ensure proper, prompt treatment is given:

  • Find the tooth(or teeth) as quickly as possible
  • Pick the tooth up by the crown only
  • Wash the tooth off and keep it from drying
  • Seek emergency dental care within the first thirty minutes after the tooth is knocked out

If the injured teeth can be replaced, a root canal is often in order after the tooth has properly settled back into place.
