Can a General Dentist Fit a Patient With Dentures?

dentures Albuquerque, NM

If you have periodontal disease or many cavities in your teeth, your dentist may recommend that you get dentures. Depending on whether you have any teeth left, you may get complete dentures or partial dentures. Partial dentures can help prevent the surrounding teeth from shifting. No matter which type your dentist recommends, a general dentist can fit you with dentures.

The process of getting dentures

Before being fitted with dentures, a patient may need to have some teeth extracted. These may be teeth that are decayed and cannot be repaired. The dentist can start fitting a patient for dentures after the gums have begun to heal.

Creating dentures can take a few weeks for patients. First, the dentist will take impressions of the patient’s mouth. The dentist will also collect detailed information about the patient’s mouth, such as how the jaws fit together and the amount of space between them.

To take impressions, the dentist will press a tray filled with putty in the patient’s upper and lower jaws. This is a quick and painless process. The dentist will use the impression to create a model of the patient’s mouth. This model can then be used to create an exact form of the dentures in wax. The patient will try on this form several times so the dentist can make adjustments to the fit, shape or color.

When the form has been fine-tuned to fit the patient properly, the dentist will send the form to a lab so the final dentures can be cast. Dentures consist of a pink plastic the same color as the gums. False teeth are placed in this plastic. After the dentures have arrived at the dentist’s office, the dentist may need to make a few small adjustments.

Complete and partial dentures

For patients who have lost all their teeth, a complete denture may be considered. The dentist will create this after the gums have begun to heal from tooth extractions. Conventional complete dentures are ready for the patient about eight to 12 weeks after the teeth have been extracted.

If the patient still has one or more teeth in the mouth, a partial denture may be used. Sometimes, this denture is attached in the mouth using a metal frame. A common type of partial denture is a fixed bridge. This denture can bridge a gap between teeth.

The dentist will place crowns on the tooth on either side of the gap. Then the dentist can place false teeth on a plastic base to create the bridge. One of the benefits of a bridge is that it prevents other teeth in the mouth from shifting.

If you have missing teeth, do not hesitate to contact a dentist. Partial and complete dentures can both help fill out a patient’s face and improve the patient’s smile. One of the benefits of fixed bridges is that they can prevent other teeth from shifting in the mouth. Getting these types of dentures is painless and is very beneficial.
